Fuel For Your Story at KOS Lofoten

Every great adventure starts somewhere.

Some begin at the trailhead. Others begin with a map spread across a café table, a hot coffee in hand, and someone pointing out the best route.

At KOS Lofoten, we like to think of ourselves as fuel for your story.

Whether you’re heading for the summit of Fløya, standing beneath the famous Svolværgeita, or taking a leisurely walk to the iconic Fiskarkona, we’re here to help you start the day well, recharge afterwards, and discover what to explore next.

Fløya: The Classic Hike Above Svolvær

If you’re searching for the best hike in Svolvær, Fløya is almost always the answer.

Rising 590 metres above sea level, the summit offers spectacular views across Svolvær, the Vestfjord and the surrounding islands. On a clear day, it’s one of the finest viewpoints in all of Lofoten.

How to Find the Trail

From KOS Lofoten on Svinøya, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the trailhead.

Simply cross the bridge into Svolvær, follow the roads towards Blåtindveien, and continue to Svolvær Barnehage (kindergarten). Behind the kindergarten you’ll find a large trail information board and the clearly marked start of the hike.

The Famous Sherpa Steps

The hike begins through a short section of woodland before reaching the impressive Sherpa-built stone staircase, known locally as Djeveltrappa.

There are 503 stone steps, built by Sherpas from Nepal to protect the mountainside from erosion while making the climb safer and more enjoyable.

Once above the steps, the trail becomes much gentler with sections of boardwalk crossing wetter ground.

About halfway along you’ll reach Djevelporten (Devil’s Gate), the famous boulder balanced dramatically between two cliffs. It’s one of the most photographed locations in Lofoten and well worth the short detour.

From there, continue along the increasingly rocky path to the summit of Fløya, where the panoramic views reward every step.

Before you head up, fuel your adventure with speciality coffee and one of our famous cinnamon buns. When you come back down, you’ve definitely earned another one.

Walk to Fiskarkona

Not every adventure has to involve climbing a mountain.

The walk to Fiskarkona, the Fisherman’s Wife statue, is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Svolvær and is suitable for almost everyone.

Starting from KOS Lofoten, simply walk across the bridge from Svinøya into the town centre and continue along the waterfront towards the harbour breakwater (molo). Follow the path all the way to the end of the pier, where you’ll find the bronze statue gazing out across the Vestfjord, waiting for the fishermen to return home.

The route is mostly flat and takes around 20 to 30 minutes each way from KOS Lofoten.

Along the way you’ll pass colourful rorbuer, fishing boats, drying racks, harbour life and some of Svolvær’s best views. Bring your camera, especially in the evening when the light over the Vestfjord is at its best.

On your return, we’ll be waiting with fresh coffee, homemade cakes, Norwegian waffles and toasted sandwiches.

Climb Svolværgeita

Towering above the town, Svolværgeita is one of Norway’s most famous climbing routes.

This is not a normal hiking trail. Reaching the summit requires climbing and rope work, making it an unforgettable adventure for anyone wanting to stand on one of Lofoten’s most iconic peaks.

The good news is that you can book guided climbs with some of the best climbing guides in Lofoten directly at KOS Lofoten.

They provide all the equipment, local knowledge and encouragement needed to safely experience this legendary mountain.

If you’ve ever seen the famous photograph of someone jumping between the Goat’s two horns, this is where it was taken.

Discover Hidden Trails with Arctic Trails

Some of the best hikes in Lofoten aren’t the ones everyone already knows.

If you’d like to escape the crowds, discover hidden viewpoints and learn more about the landscape, ask us about Arctic Trails, operated by our sister company, Lofoten Insight.

Rather than following a fixed itinerary, the guides choose the best hike for the day’s weather and your group’s ability. You could find yourself exploring Glomtinden, Kleppstadheia, Tjeldbergtinden or another local favourite that many visitors never discover.

Bookings can be made right here in the café.
