What is kos?

Discover the Nordic Feeling at KOS Lofoten

If you’ve travelled through Scandinavia, you’ve probably heard words like hygge, kos, lagom, and friluftsliv. They’re more than trendy Nordic buzzwords. They describe a way of life that people from around the world have fallen in love with.

At KOS Lofoten, we’ve built our café around one of Norway’s favourite words: kos.

What does “Kos” mean?

There isn’t a perfect English translation for kos.

It’s a feeling.

It might be sitting beside the sea with a hot coffee while fishing boats drift through the harbour. It could be sharing fresh cinnamon buns with friends after hiking Fløya. It might be warming up with homemade cake while rain taps against the windows, or watching the midnight sun paint the mountains in gold.

Kos is comfort.

Kos is slowing down.

Kos is enjoying simple moments that become unforgettable memories.

It’s one of the reasons visitors fall in love with Norway.

Kos vs Hygge

Many people know the Danish word hygge, which became famous around the world for its cosy lifestyle.

Norway has its own version: kos.

While hygge often focuses on candles, blankets and cosy evenings indoors, kos is just as happy outside. Norwegians can find kos on a mountain summit, beside a campfire, watching the Northern Lights, or simply sharing coffee after an adventure.

That perfectly sums up life in Lofoten.

Adventure and relaxation belong together.

Friluftsliv: The Nordic Love of Nature

Another word you’ll often hear in Norway is friluftsliv, meaning “open-air living.”

It’s the idea that spending time outdoors makes us happier and healthier.

Whether you’re hiking to Fløya, paddleboarding around Svinøya, photographing the midnight sun, or simply walking beside the Vestfjord, you’re experiencing friluftsliv.

The best part?

Afterwards, you come back for a well-earned coffee, cinnamon bun and a little more kos.

Lagom: Not Too Much, Not Too Little

Our Swedish neighbours have lagom, meaning “just the right amount.”

It’s about balance instead of excess.

That philosophy fits perfectly with a day in Lofoten.

Explore incredible scenery, take amazing photographs, enjoy fantastic food, then slow down and appreciate where you are.

There’s no rush.

More Than Just a Café

KOS Lofoten isn’t simply somewhere to grab coffee.

It’s a place to pause.

Located on beautiful Svinøya in Svolvær, our café overlooks the harbour and Vestfjord, with views that constantly change with the weather and the seasons. You might spot sea eagles overhead, fishing boats returning with their catch, or even whales passing through the fjord.

Inside you’ll find speciality coffee, famous cinnamon buns, homemade cakes, Norwegian waffles, toasted sandwiches and plenty of comfortable places to relax.

We’re also home to Galleri Gunnar Berg, where you can discover the work of one of Lofoten’s most celebrated artists, and our team is always happy to recommend hikes, photography locations and the best experiences around the islands.

Find Your Kos in Lofoten

Many visitors come to Lofoten searching for dramatic mountains, fishing villages and unforgettable landscapes.

They leave remembering something else.

The feeling.

The calm after a hike.

The first sip of great coffee.

The smell of fresh cinnamon buns.

The sound of gulls outside the window.

The conversation that lasts longer than planned.

That’s kos.

Whether you’re starting your day, taking a break between adventures, or simply looking for one of the cosiest cafés in Svolvær, we’d love to welcome you.

Come for the coffee.

Stay for the kos.
