Discover the legacy of gunnar berg at

Hidden among the historic buildings of Svinøya, Galleri Gunnar Berg is one of Lofoten’s cultural treasures. Whether you’re passionate about art, fascinated by local history, or simply looking for something unique to do during your visit to Svolvær, the gallery offers a remarkable journey into the life and work of one of Northern Norway’s greatest painters.

Meet Lofoten’s Own Artist

Born on Svinøya in 1863, Gunnar Berg grew up surrounded by fishing boats, mountains, and the bustling life of one of Norway’s most important fishing communities. Although he travelled to Germany to study at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, his heart always remained in Lofoten. His paintings captured not only the dramatic landscapes, but also the people whose lives depended on the sea. Fishermen hauling nets, busy harbours, rorbuer, merchant ships, and everyday life became the subjects that would define his legacy.

Home to the Legendary Trollfjordslaget

The centrepiece of the gallery is now a replica of Gunnar Berg’s monumental masterpiece, Trollfjordslaget (The Battle of Trollfjord).

The original painting tells the story of one of the most dramatic events in Norwegian fishing history. In 1890, tensions exploded in the narrow Trollfjord when traditional fishermen confronted larger steam-powered vessels over access to the valuable cod fishery. Gunnar Berg witnessed the aftermath and transformed the event into an extraordinary multi-panel artwork that has become one of Norway’s most important historical paintings.

The new replica allows visitors to experience the scale, drama, and incredible detail of this iconic work up close, making it one of the highlights of any visit to Svolvær.

Original Paintings by Gunnar Berg

Alongside Trollfjordslaget, the gallery displays an extensive collection of original works by Gunnar Berg. You’ll discover atmospheric harbour scenes, quiet winter landscapes, fishing boats resting beneath towering mountains, and intimate glimpses into daily life in Lofoten over 130 years ago.

Many visitors are surprised by how modern his paintings feel. Rather than simply painting beautiful scenery, Berg captured the rhythm, hardship, and character of the people who lived here. His work provides a fascinating window into Lofoten before tourism, when fishing shaped every aspect of life.

More Than an Art Gallery

A visit to Galleri Gunnar Berg is also a journey through Lofoten’s history. The gallery sits on historic Svinøya, where Gunnar himself grew up, allowing visitors to experience the very landscape that inspired many of his paintings.
